Counter dilemma - granite or marble?

Granite and marble are both natural stones commonly used for countertops and flooring. Here are the main differences between them:

  1. Composition: Granite is an igneous rock that is made up of quartz, feldspar, mica, and other minerals, while marble is a metamorphic rock that is made up of calcium carbonate.

  2. Appearance: Granite typically has a speckled appearance due to the different minerals that make it up, while marble has a veined appearance due to how it forms.

  3. Durability: Granite is a more rigid and durable stone than marble, making it more resistant to scratches and chips. Marble is softer and more porous, making it more prone to scratches, stains, etches.

  4. Maintenance: Both granite and marble require regular cleaning and sealing to protect them from stains and damage. However, marble is more sensitive to acidic substances, such as citrus fruits and vinegar, and requires frequent sealing to protect against etching.

  5. Cost: Granite is generally less expensive than marble, although this can vary depending on the quality and rarity of the stone.

Overall, while both granite and marble are beautiful and durable natural stones, granite is a better choice for high-traffic areas or areas where spills and scratches are more likely to occur, while marble is better suited for low-traffic areas where it can be more easily maintained.
